FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 9, 2020
Buy Black 365 releases a hyper-local Black-owned business locator app for Baltimore, MD.
— Touted by users as a bible to guide consumer spending with local Black-owned businesses. —
Baltimore, MD – Mobile phone users, both iOS and Android, can now easily locate Black-owned businesses near their neighborhood thanks to Baltimore city resident, Meredith Hurston. Hurston has developed a mobile web application that lists Black-owned businesses in the metro-Baltimore area and even provides driving directions. In less than 2 weeks since the release, there are 225 restaurants and businesses listed and it has been downloaded nearly 600 times. Friday, July 10, marks the app’s 2-week release anniversary. New listings are added weekly.
The idea for a hyper-local app came from a personal need to organize all the local Black-owned businesses that were being shared in the Facebook group, Buy Black Networking Baltimore. There was no easy way to keep track of the locations of all the businesses, so Meredith sprang into action. In the Facebook group, she discovered gas stations, convenience stores, franchises, restaurants and more, all of which are Black-owned businesses.
The 1st version of the app was ready after about 3 days of development. It was released into the Facebook group that prompted the idea and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Crystal Parker commented on the post saying “Love this!!!! My new Bible for my dollars!” Also, The Boonie Breakdown Podcast featured the app as pick of the week in episode 143.
